You've made it here! Hopefully the basic features will come naturally to you, but if it doesn't we are here to help!

The subforum topics can be viewed by clicking the forums button on the top page.
Underneath that, you may find the New Posts to be useful. This will show all of the threads that have posts that you have not seen. If you click on a thread title from this list, it will jump to the first new post.

To view a thread, click on forums at the top of the page. Click on the subforum you are interested in, for example click on 'Social', and then click on the title of a thread.
To jump to the oldest post that you have not yet read click on Go to First Unread which is on the left hand side both above the original post, as well as below the last post for that thread.

To write a post, type in the box that says Write your reply... and then click the red Post Reply button, or more options, which offers the option to Preview before posting.

To start a new thread, there's a red Post New Thread button near the top and bottom of every forum.

If you wish to quote someone, the simplest way is to click Reply on the right hand side of the post you are interested in. If you use reply on a post that already included a quote from elsewhere, that quote will not automatically be included in your reply (see posts below for an example).

When reading through a thread where posters have used this reply feature to quote one another, a little up arrow appears to the right of X said: . If you click this arrow, you will be taken up to the post that was used for the quote (see posts below to test this out).

Someone can be tagged by typing the @ symbol, and then start typing their username, without a space. When a box pops up with the correct name, click it. For example, my tag is: @ChemGal. Tagging someone will alert them if they have that option selected. Readers can also bring up the user's profile box by clicking on this tag.

A tip for getting around a bit quicker is the Quick Navigation icon. It looks like 3 horizontal bars at the bottom right hand side, and when you hover your cursor over it, Open Quick Navigation appears. If you click it a popup button appears. You can access everything on the site without using this, but this might save you a few clicks from getting to where you want to go.

This is reply #3. In the next line I am going to quote reply #2. Note that if you click the arrow that is immediately below, you will jump to reply #2.
This is reply #2. It is going to be quoted.

And here I have quoted reply #3. Notice how a nestled quote does not appear. If you click the arrow in this message, you will jump back up to reply #3.

Thanks chemgal for the instructions - I will certainly have to work with this a bit to learn my way around, and I think your text and examples will be helpful to me!

I thought I was getting things right but I am really struggling getting to the different forums and I can't find sub - forums.

CH, maybe trying the quick navigation tool would help you out? It's three bars near the bottom right hand corner, and is below your reply box but about the contact us, help, etc. If you click on it, you can then click on any of the subforums. You do have to scroll to see all of them.

The other way (not using quick navigation):
Click on forums at the top. This lists all of the subforums. Just click directly on one of the subforum names. Ie. Social, Relationships, etc.

I'ved editted the 3rd paragraph in the OP to start back with the main forum page. Hopefully that will make it more clear for people.

Question

When I look at my name in the upper right corner it says messages 3. When I click on my name that screen comes up with "no messages" o the main page but the left side of hyena page still shows messages 3. How do I read them?

Lastpointe, the message count is just your posts. I'll send you a conversation - WC2's version of a private message, to double check you can get them.

This is my first visit in here. I will tune up my profile later. Hopefully this will be an easy adjustment.

@Northwind glad to see you here! I think most are finding that once they get a feel for the layout the basic stuff comes. There were some details that took me a while, and I'm sure there will be others to come, but it's more what's that? and not why can't I post :)

Sorry to bother you with something that is likely really simple. I am wondering how to copy a piece of a post from someone. I see where it says in the tips section to click on reply and it does work but I get this
Hey @RevLindsay G King , did you mean for that post to go in another thread?

Edit: Found the thread where Linds posted a similar post, so I moved it there.
I would like to know how to get something quoted and showing in the white boxes

Yep, that's what the QUOTE tag does. Play with it a bit.
Chansen, now that I am finally registered, is it safe for us to assume that WC 2 in now easy register, stay connected and navigate? I realize that getting a new Forum up and running is not all that easy, so, avoiding negative thinking, I post the following for simply for information.

Things for me, went well when I first joined. Then things fell apart. Obstacles galore fell in the way. One demon or another would interrupt and tell me, "You need a unique e-mail!" Or, "the e-mail you are using is already taken".

Of course it has been taken, and by me. I have no problem like this when I write in my Google Forum. The same is true for a science forum I enjoy, which has a section for philosophy of science.

The URL there is www.scienceagogo.com where, in 2007, I started a thread using the name Turner--my wife's maiden name, and my son's name.

Below is the first thread I posted. The sarcastic cynics did not welcome me with open arms, but with the help of the moderators, I survived:

Philosophy of Religions--all religions, including...
The thread now has over 9, 011,000 hits--and growing, daily. Here it is in print form.

==================
Needless to say, and without blaming anyone, I did become extremely frustrated with the time I wasted trying to register and navigate WC 2. Now, I am looking forward to lots of happy dialogues. Is it possible to preview, edit and change things before the final posting?

Lindsay
