If Crispr tech pans out, I expect eventually there will b like a cream or a simple outpatient procedure to become who one really is (or even change as one wishes, much like we use makeup and clothing today...those of us who use clothing that is  )

Get ready for the future, folks
    And never forget to laugh

If only it was used to eliminate the selfish brute a**hole gene (which is probably dormant, if not active, in all of us) - which tends to cancel out the empathy gene (speaking metaphorically) - first and foremost, there wouldn’t be a problem with it thereafter. But like all technology, the selfish and power hungry often find a way to use it to oppress and manipulate people for their own gain, at the expense of the “weak” who they deplore and think deserve their hardships because they are weaker. Classic eugenics...sociopaths have already shown is why it’s wrong and that’s the main reason why we need to be careful of this technology, if not outright oppose it. If they are going to monetize it by trying to eliminate perceived genetic weaknesses, and creative competitive strong-folk racing to the top, humans will become a race of total assholes. “Identity politics” will become far more monstrous than political correctness. Unless the genes which make us behave monstrously are edited out first, rather than those that make us, supposedly, physically weaker. I am not hopeful that this technology is a good idea...especially not in this political climate.

The problem is that "selfish a**hole" likely isn't a single gene and likely isn't 100% genetic. It's probably a learned behaviour that is supported by a number of genetic personality traits. So, we need to treat both the social and genetic elements. IOW, we'll be dealing with selfish a**holes for a while to come. *sighs sadly*

like an old roomie told me, everyone is someone elsez a**hole :3

zero tolerance policies are horrifically damaging
cause more harm than good (cf. blasphemy laws, Prohibition...)
better 2 teach peeps a Way of Liberation and to modify incentivez so that one doesn't have to b a moral heroine to go through life

That's both an ideal and idealistic. You still need to draw a line somewhere to keep a certain degree of order in society. Agreed that blasphemy laws and Prohibition aren't it (I oppose both). But if someone starts calling for violence or genocide against another person/people or using false information to turn people against them (Jews sacrificing Christian babies type stuff), that's a line that needs to drawn.

What if the genetic personality traits that make humans brutish assholes were elimated first? Then the social traits - eventually - wouldn’t be learned.

Why is that less important than eliminating cancer? Or, eliminating Down’s syndrome?

You would hope, but I suspect the interaction between genes and socialization here is very complex. And you'd need to be very careful about what defines an "a**hole". A lot of people called Harlan Ellison an a**hole and I wouldn't want to live in a world without his kind of a**hole.

we live in a nonpragmatic society.
what i have riffed out above requires work and time and incremental changes..."Progressives" don't want that...they want instant change forced upon peeps by the state...

there is also the major problem of beliefs; since one can't change or choose onez beliefs, what to do with somone who believes something that is horrible?

(and one can call for genocide against identifiable groups...some so called groups arent identifiable...if one can self identify as anything, that isnt an identifiable group...and one cant genocide an individual...

if hate crime etc laws exist, they should also apply to ALL VIOLENCE)

i'm afraid we live in an increasingly instant gratitication society where everything is true and there are no limits...

woah..ook where this has gone...woo hoo!

I mean the kind of a**hole out to create a “pure” race of selfish, competitive assholes like themselves, who deplore any human frailty, difference, or compassion. We’ve seen it before.

I wouldn’t even bring it up were that not true, and if that technology was not here.

I think that a**hole gene exists in every race, creed, and gender. I’d rather see the desire for power gone, equality paramount, before we look to monetizing near immortality and making the human species more invincible, more powerful. To focus on ridding humanity of all biologically based weaknesses, except that one (which is perceived as strength) - we have it backwards. It kills the spirit of compassionate humanity. Humanity will become a brute race that defeats itself. Isn’t it bad enough?

    Exactly
The Founding Fathers were assholes to Britain
Joan of Arc was an a**hole to the people she help3d murder
Picasso apparently was an a**hole to some women, and he produced amazing art
Genghis Kahn. Mohammad. Moses. All were assholes and murderers who changes the world.

Bware of what we ask for...we just might get it *shudder*

Actually, overall, I think CRISPR is a bad idea that should’ve remained science fiction.

Can we have creative transformation without brutishness? I think we can. Just because the brutes won’t let it happen, doesn’t mean it’s not possible. The question is, when will we ever let that happen in this dimension? ...and that’s where my faith comes in. It becomes necessary.

We can have it without brutishness, but a certain amount of tolerance for being cranky and willing to speak without a filter has to be tolerated. I don't consider any of those brutish. Many great artists have been like that, Ellison just being a recent example. He would tell it like it is to anyone of any political stripe and didn't really care who got butthurt by it. I can guarantee that if I hunt around a bit, I can find something by him that will offend and upset you. However, he also wrote some of the most sublime literature of the past century. The risk of what you propose is that we define "a**hole" too broadly, we risk losing more than just "brutishness".

Be really careful about that one, Kimmio. The Down's community is pretty emphatic that theirs is simply another valid gene expression, and one which, in fact, appears to incorporate that "peaceful" gene you seem in search of.
