just a reminder that populism is not a dirty word, and we should not let it be subverted by the stalwarts of the status quo - to put all forms of populism in the same camp. Right wing fascist populism gaining strength today should just be called fascism. Because fascism uses populist anger to spur on projects that gut social cohesion and create such division that they have even lead to genocidal policy. Left wing populism is democratic socialism, aiming to transform public disappointment toward past systems that failed them, into action that builds a health democracy that fairly represents and advocates for the wellbeing of all without prejudice toward ethnicity, faith, gender, sexual orientation or disability. As I said on another thread - Tommy Douglas was a populist.
Jack Layton, who died just over 7 yrs ago, lest we forget, was a populist. And a social justice advocate.
Don't let it become a dirty word like what's been done to the words "social justice", in our rightward leaning post-truth "newspeak" climate. Stay reasonable. Resist that.
Layton lived the politics he believed in: party
