Many churches have knitting ministries - this though invites people to knit DURING the worship service if they wish, which is a bit different.My Baptist church in Toronto had a knitting ministry going on for a short time.

That's a bit ridiculous imho. Worship services are for corporate worship - not individual handicrafts.

Many people do it anyway to keep their hands busy, may as well have them doing it for the benefit of the church's mission. After all, it's not like a class where the teacher is going to call them on it (I hope).
Imho, their minds and hearts should be focused on worshipping God - not on one knit-one pearl-two.
And they could be. Keeping the hands busy is a way of focusing the mind for some people.
Moreover, if Sally likes knitting and is allowed to knit during service, why shouldn't Carol who prefers embroidery be allowed to embroider. And then there's John who prefers rug hooking... Bill who prefers wood working, Jo who prefers basketball...
