How was church today?

A half-off-topic question:
Do United Church congregations usually celebrate Reformation Sunday?
It seems hit and miss where some years they do and other years they forget. Part of the trouble in the case of the church I attend is it can be kind of Congregationalist more than United so sometimes the larger church is missed.

Sermon yesterday was by William Brook and the topic was how science and mysticism intersect in the Big Bang. The idea was that we are all part of the ongoing Big Bang, the stuff that makes us us was there 14 billion years ago and continues on in the evolutionary dance of the cosmos. Scripture wasn't from the Bible, but instead was taken from the book "Hearts on Fire" by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. A very interesting sermon, it has been an excellent Fall so far with the sermons at Hillhurst.

The highlight of church for me occurred after the service during coffee time.
I was standing on the edge of a small group when I overheard: "On the afternoon of the election, B--- H----- and I walked down King Street*, stopping to chat with people and asking them if they had voted yet. Most had not. They told us, 'I don't bother.' 'I voted once but it didn't make any difference,' ' You have to have an address to vote - I ain't got no address.' 'They don't care about us.' 'The only people who care about us are the churches.' 'Yea,the churches, Especially that one.' and he pointed here,"
And I thought 'By their works ye shall know them,' and 'They will know we are Christians by our love.'

*where people down-on-their-luck tend to gather,

Elimination and separation by success doesn't happen in church ... does it?

Must be de evil in me made me say that ... should I be sorry for that critical moment?

Hubby and I were at a church on Sunday. Our chosen location was the RC place where there was a Fall Supper being offered for $15 a plate. It was rated as 'OK' by our group and we wondered why they didn't have anyone with carving skills. The roast beef was in thick slabs. Not as good as the Anglican or United suppers at the same price. On Monday the Lutherans will demonstrate their skills.

My church has

music that they play until neighbours in the neighbourhood complained

that the music woke them up every morning. Grrrr

Received news before the Service on Sunday that the daughter of one of the Minister's I had a hand in training so many years ago was killed in an accident on the Trans Canada Highway a few days earlier. I spent Sunday afternoon at the funeral home expressing condolences and sitting nearby while he wrestled with an unexpressible grief.

Some islands suck.
Sorry to hear this news, RevJohn. Sitting by is so hard but so important. You know this, of course, but I wanted to remind you that you did a good thing.

Certain things really do suck. No getting around it.

We were friends with an elderly couple, now both passed on, who had outlived their only child. Similar situation (accident) IIRC. They never really got over that. My thoughts go out to your friend.

Sang a bunch of great songs to start the day

Watched a great little clip re blame by Dr. Brene Brown

Sermon has me pondering

Matthew 7:1-5

Judging OthersA)" style="font-size: 0.9em; line-height: 22px; vertical-align: top;">
7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.B)" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; vertical-align: top;"> 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.C)" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; vertical-align: top;">

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

I envy you. Though we had a beautiful service, I still crave for more varied (and lively) music.
Today we celebrated St Luke's patronal festival with a Choral Eucharist - the choir was great.
Next Sunday I'll probably go to a Presbyterian or Lutheran church to celebrate Reformation Sunday, which my parish isn't going to do.

There was a new bass guitarist, a young man who can play drums , guitar, piano but was playing guitar, a youth who plays drum kit, minister plays various percussion, two vocalists, and a talented jazz musician who leads them. Quality music.

I'd love to have this once in a while!

Best part of Church
As the Grand Officiant was heading to foyer and took off his green Anglican tabard...our eyes met and I hooted "take it off!".

So he complied and gave me a short floor show.

What a guy who looks nice in that dress :3

Good ol Jesus of the Order of virgin born Melchizeedeck,

We visited a church here that had a guest minister. I loved his sermon and it gave me lots to think about. We got to reconnect with old friends while we were there. She was one of my mother's good friends and was at my first birthday party.

The minister preached on a Matthew passage and used four words. Neither Mr Northwind or I can remember the words. I'm going to check the church website to see the sermon again. They record them.

Went with my sister to her church today. Sermon by Rev. Tim Archibald was on the parable of the talents. The talents that each of us is blessed with and how do we use (or bury) these talents. A well thought out and interesting sermon. First time I have heard Tim preach and it was a worthwhile experience.

Listened to the doubts about the message on the mysterious blanket job on the roof of Davids Temple ... when Bathsheba caused David a loss of lucid behaviour ... to indicate what love alone can do to a perfect creation ...

I know the underlying effect was to break up a few souls ... about the relationship of Solomon with Bathsheba ... the whole thing a wash in sorts ... white water festival!

Much fiddling done in upper Arias ... as the rich sang and danced in the rye ... something avoided by Ester Jinns ... these can make folk edgy!

If he is from Nova Scotia, then I have worked together with his wife here at my hospital. Lovely family. Were very sad to loose his wife when she left NS, she was such a gentle nurse.

It's a huge, on-going problem - the lack of relevance of the music to people's lived experience of great music. How can someone whose soul is truly stirred by Freddy Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" sit still through that awful dirge that is "How Great Thou Art"...
