So I'm reading in various threads that our BC contingent are sweating it out this week ... uncharacteristically hot & humid weather for them. They're having trouble sleeping, getting grouchy.

What advice can we send them about keeping cool without air conditioning?

Fill a bucket with some cool water - sit with your feet in it ... aaaahhhh ...

1. Get up early and do the active work (gardening, exercising) in those early hours. Then take an afternoon nap in the hottest part of the afternoon.

2. Do not cook indoors in the heat. Boil potatoes in the early part of the day and make into potato salad for later. Do not turn on the oven, no matter what. That residual heat will stay in the apartment all day. Eat cold food. Or be creative with your BBQ - I once boiled spaghetti in a foil lasagne pan on the BBQ and heated up the pasta sauce on the side burner.

3. People laugh at me for this, but honestly, it works: trick your brain into thinking that it's cold. Play Christmas carols and watch movies where people have to struggle with cold conditions. (Alive, The Day After Tomorrow, March of the Penguins.)

4. Go see a matinee movie in the hottest part of the afternoon. Sitting for a couple of hours in an air conditioned theatre will give you courage to face the evening heat.

5. Take a cool shower or bath before going to bed. If your skin feels damp in the humidity, use talcum powder (or even just cornstarch) to feel
more comfortable.

Ah yes - retreat to movie theatre or mall ... used to be one of our favourites in pre-AC days!

Get up early. Even if it feels cool, shut all windows and pull all blinds and curtains. Turn on all fans. Follow the directions from Go about cooking. Sleep one to a bed. It is not fun in the heat.

We keep our southern facing curtains closed.
and close those windows when the sun is directly on them ... open them once the sun has moved on - and open everything up at night! If it's secure to do so of course ... summer is prime time for prowlers around here, looking for open windows & easy screens to break in through. We've had recent warnings from police that this behaviour is on the rise again.

true about that body heat from shared beds crazyheart! One VERY hot summer my son was an infant - and breastfeeding was a pretty sweaty activity! I'd put a folded towel between his body & mine to try to keep us both a little cooler!

Depends on the time though. Downstairs, 10pm it's often still cooler inside than out.

Carolla, your hat and scarf make me hot.

I go by this rule. When it is hot drink coffee or tea. Then the inside temp becomes the same as the outside. Drinking cold drinks makes you hotter.

Thank you. I have been indoors nearly all day. I can't handle being out in it for long. We have trees shading our apt and it faces south but that hasn't helped much. A little breeze is blowing and I need to go out for an hour. Cool bath, definately. And cold dinner. Sandwiches. And cold juice, and ice and frozen peas on my head, is what I've done so far. My feet are the worst!!

Is that why a cold beer tastes so good?
