Okay, this is just a thread to post anything musical that catches your fancy. Comment as you wish, but I hope we can keep the discussion on music.

This came up in my channel today. It's two of the current members of Celtic Woman with a pair of males singer who I do not know singing the old American folk tune Shenandoah.


I am quite enjoying this cast of Celtic Woman. They seem to be a bit more experimental than others, and have released some nice videos and performances that aren't the usual production-heavy Celtic Woman material. Their "One Mike, One Take" videos, that has them performing acoustic versions of popular songs is especially good, highlighting their voices in a way that a full-blown Celtic Woman performance sometimes does not.




They also give the new fiddler (just joined last year to replace the original fiddler) a chance to show off a bit.

Recorded in 1944, this may have been the first rock and roll ever recorded.

Nina's amazing. I'm not even sure now when I first heard her.

Just learned that singer-songwriter Neil Diamond is giving up touring due to Parkinson's. He's been on his 50th anniversary tour meaning he's been at this almost as long as I have been alive. I remember being entranced by his music for Jonathan Livingston Seagull when we played a suite of it in band in high school. Read the book and owned the album but never did see the movie.

I love "Because the Night" and this may be the ultimate performance of the song. Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen, who co-wrote the song, backed by U2, arguably the greatest rock band of my lifetime.

 
Kurt Hugo Schneider is an extraordinary producer and arranger. This "love ballad" take on a song that was originally a lively rocker is quite fun. Both singers are part of his regular stable and have put out some pretty neat stuff on their own as well as with KHS.

I am a sucker for seeing singers who are married couples perform together. The dynamic is often quite different from a duet of unrelated singers. Here, married Broadway stars Jeremy Jordan and Ashley Spencer sing the duet version of "Beauty and the Beast" at a Celine Dion (who originally sang it with Peebo Bryson) Tribute concert. Jeremy is a bit of a clown when performing in concert and nearly cracks Ashley up a couple times, a delightful dynamic for this song.

I fell in love with Ruthie Foster when I saw her at the Bear Creek Folk Festival in Alberta two years ago. She blew the lid off the place (outdoor venue) when she dang Phenomenal Woman.


And then this too

On Sunday morning all the bands with black gospel roots sang together. They came absolutely alive and became electric when they joined Ruthie on this Mavis Staples song

 
I didn't used to like Corb Lund. Living in the BC Peace then in Alberta makes Corb grow on a person. How could you not appreciate his humour in this?


I heard him interviewed once. He seemed like a down to earth nice guy.

I would love to see her live and will keep my ears open if she does come close to where I live.
I believe it was Amy Sky (canadian singer/songwriter) that wrote Phenomenal Woman based on a poem by Maya Angelou, and truly enjoyed Ruthie's take on it.

No new music post. But, damn, I just heard Lake Street Dive's "Good Kisser" (also from the new album and already posted in So What Are You Listening To?) on CBC 2 Morning. First time I've actually heard a radio station play them.(y)
 
From the recent celebrations around the Juno's, Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo teams up blues-rock guitarist/singer/songwriter Terra Lightfoot to tear through a Blue Rodeo classic. Her guitar solo alone makes it worth a listen. Great performance of a great song.

The new album, entitled Free Yourself Up, came out today and it's a beauty. The band is in fine form, even rocking out on a song (no videos around for it yet) called "Dude". Along with the album, they released an official video for "Good Kisser" (the previous one I posted was a live performance).


This is one of those bands I wish was more popular. They have the talent and deserve it. This album is fantastic. But stylistically, they just aren't what the mainstream wants these days. I'll take Racheal as a singer over any of the dance-pop sirens hands down, though.
 
Oh, and in case you didn't catch it, the band has grown, adding keyboard player Akie Bermiss to the lineup for this album.
