A while back, in a now quiet movie recommendations thread, @Inannawhimsey and I were trading recommendations for short films on Youtube. I have continued to enjoy these, finding that 2-4 of them will generally fill up my 45 minute sessions on our stationary bike in the evening. So, I thought I would start sharing them. Be warned, given my taste in movies, these will tend to the weird and fantastical.

"The Fisherman" is a recent discovery, a Spanish-Hong Kong co-production that I could best describe as "The Old Man and the Sea" as rewritten by H. P. Lovecraft, though the ending doesn't quite fit that either. The Hong Kong actor playing the titular character is terrific, IMHO.

And one that I did post in the last thread but thought I'd highlight it again. "Harlequin" is a dark crime drama that is as good as any full-length feature I've seen in that genre.

Any other fans of short films got recommendations or at least ones that interested you? Youtube is full of them. I imagine that other services like Vimeo have their fair share, too.

Here's the trailer for my youngest son's short film. It was featured at TIFF during the Canadian Shorts series. Unfortunately you only get a glimpse of him in the trailer, despite having a principle role in the film. He is the boy pushing the truck in the khaki pants.
@DaisyJane
How sweet :3
U must be so proud
I see that it reached its funding goal too

How does "glimpse" equal "principle role?"

Oats Studios
Neill Blomkamp's experiment at crowdfunded shorts...

A few (enough for a taste) are available online for free. For those who have seen Neill's works, you'll know what to expect. NSFW. People exploding like bags of blood. Etc. At least one of the films is a comedy, tho.
So far an alien invasion flick (with Sigourney Weaver *squee*)
A vietnam flick
A fake infomercial
And one aboot Deity and His Butler and us Humans

No linkee? I'd heard about the one with Sigourney. Too bad his Alien sequel/alternate timeline didn't happen. Sounded more interesting than what Scott's been doing (which, AFAICT without watching them, is basically building a backstory that sucks all the mystery out of the original).

Ah, one of Oat Studios' videos was actually sitting in my Youtube recommendations so now I know where to find them. It's a long-ish one called Firebase (the Vietnam flick mentioned in @Inannawhimsey 's post).

Watched Firebase. Good as far as it goes but it's only part 1. They are crowdfunding for part 2. Basically, it is 1970 in Vietnam and both the US troops and VC are being terrorized by a monster called the River God.

Its great
Its an antimythology
Or an antisystem
Lovecraft never intended for his creations to be part of a system...or a mythos...
The closest he came was to call what he was doing "Yog-Sothery"...
that's the beauty of his works; all of us are free to make and invent what we wish...

There actually is 1 author, current, who Out Lovecrafts Lovecraft...
