The ignore feature: why & how

I started a thread on the topic in the tips/techniques area. I would be happy to respond to the negativity around this tool then, such as words like "crutch" and "self-discipline"
I don't mean it in a negative manner. It's just that I figure I need to work on my ability to look past some things to avoid confrontations, instead of wearing blinders.

I don't understand your second last paragraph in your post, RevJohn. "it betrays a lack of self disciple in dealing with criticism". Can you expand on it?

I haven't heard of anyone using the ignore feature to avoid criticism. Maybe I am missing something.

I can choose to walk down a street under construction and put up with the noise and grit and learn to suffer through it. It is unlikely that I would ever have confrontation with the construction workers, after all, they are just doing what they do. The annoyance is only in my life..not there's or even others who like watching construction.
I could also choose to walk down a different street , not hear the construction, not deal with the noise.

I see the ignore feature as making a choice to ignore what feels like noise/grit at the present time in my life.
Others see an opportunity to learn to look past.
Both are valid options.

That's fair. Hey, I've recommended the ignore feature before, so I'm not against it. I just figure I'm better off not using it. It's a personal decision for me as well.

Me being narrow I suspect.

Whatever reason for reaching for the ignore might be it is inherently selfish. Which isn't automatically a negative thing. When I have a fever for example. I go to bed and tell everyone to leave me alone. Part of that is to reduce the possibility of spreading whatever it is that plagues me. The other part is that as an introvert I don't need anybody asking me how I feel. I'll simply feel it. And, if the feeling is too intense I'll look for something to provide relief.

Which is me saying, in a nutshell, I cannot handle this alone any longer. That, as far as I am concerned is honest criticism. Honest self criticism if nothing else.

The ignore feature is for folk who likewise cannot handle the situation alone any longer. Whether they wish to name their issue noise or criticism is probably beside the point..

Fair enough.

Only once have I put someone on ignor when his posts were bugging the hell out of me. But it was an interesting thread and having his posts ignored made it choppy and difficult to follow. I soon cancelled the ignor.
I find that for me it makes more sense to leave the annoying people alone. If they are posting on a thread I'm interested in, I find that I can skip or skim their posts, and only really read them if need be to understand someone else's post.
Some threads I find that two people will talk back and forth to each other in what reads like gibberish. I skip over them to see if anyone else is carrying on the theme of the thread. Other threads will have two or three people rehashing the same thing over and over, page after page. I often ignor the entire thread.
I can usually tell by the opening post if I will be interested in following a thread.

If I had a person continuously harassing me, I would probably put that person on ignor. (On the other hand, I might want to see what they were saying in case it was something I should report to the monitors.

I'd say that in a case of clear, continuous harassment, hit Report on the harassing posts/conversations so we can sic the mods on them, then ignore them.

The ignore feature is for folk who ... cannot handle the situation alone any longer.

I don't think I agree with that. It's one possible reason for using the "Ignore" button. With regards to the one situation in which I've used it, it was not because I "couldn't" handle the situation. In fact there was no real "situation." I simply saw nothing positive or constructive in what was being posted and chose to leave the individual behind. Better for all concerned.

The last time I put someone on Ignore it was because I needed a break from their almost-constant mocking of my religion. Usually I find said mocking humorous, but did feel the need for a short break from it.

I've had ministers and academic authorities tell me that critical thinking is just not allowed by people dealing with small stuff ... and thus detailing gets lost on apes ...

Can lead to a lot of grunting though when one tries to recall the little things that upset the fight syndrome ... they floated of in flight ... like bosons ... the humble god particle ... like that man on the MBA ... he never returned ... except as a hole at the degree of magnitude ... thus wholly space!

information needed. I found how to ignore and at random I ignored someone. Then, I went to

remove it -unignore but I don.t see the poster showing up and posting . What have I done wrong?

Crazyheart, when you look at the person's profile do you see the word ignore or unignore

I think if you look at YOUR OWN profile - you will see in the list "People you Ignore" (bottom of right hand column) - click on that & the person will be listed. Beside their name you can find the "Stop Ignoring" button click this & then "save changes" should do it.

I grok :3

Going a bit further afield, I can see a time coming soon when in real life we will have an ignore function -- we will have a technology (like google glass...) that will enable the user to overlay into their perceived reality the senses that they want...so just imagine the fun (chaos) of a business meeting where everyone there will have different settings -- one will be seeing the meeting in terms of a Sam Spade film noir, another will be seeing everyone as furries, another one will be seeing everyone as angels and everyone speaking Latin, and so forth

It'll certainly do something interesting to communication -- maybe lessening the instances of 'you appropriated my culture/Belief System and I am offended...'

Who knows?

We have and are going to have multiple ways of achieving a similar end goal. Like one can take psychedelics...or certain magnetic technologies...or learn a Way of Liberation (meditation, and so forth...)
